favicon.ico is an image file used by Web browsers as an icon to identify a Website.
favicon.ico is usually a 16x16 pixels image file in .ICO format located in the document root directory of a Website. But other image sizes of 32x32, 48x48, 64x64 pixels and image file formats of PNG, GIF, JPEG are also supported.
When a browser displays Web page, it will fetch the favicon.ico file and displays the image next to the Web page address.
